Here is why you get the RROD with your Xbox 360. The soldering joints under the chips are using cheaper material that causes more failures. It is allegded that Microsoft tried to cut costs by using a cheaper soldering material which had a lower quality. Because of the material of the soldering joints, when the Xbox is on for a long period of time, the metal expands. The soldering joint is made to expand with heat, but the underlying problem has to do with the metals contracting when it cools. When it cools, it forms these air bubbles that cause weak spots called cold solder joints. Just like a computer is supposed to heat up and cool down, it creates a crack under the chips with cause the red ring of death.
What happens is that the towel trick makes the Xbox heat up even more, causing more cracks later on.
The only reason why this trick works is that it gets hot enough to melt the solder, but also it damages your Xbox when you are done playing. These cracks don’t have to be big. Even a hairline crack is enough for electrical current to be cut off.
